A Touch of Magic in the Alps – AI as a Storytelling Tool

What begins with a mountain hut, a storm, and two hikers unfolds into a surreal short-film experience featuring animal characters, humor, and depth. In “The Secret of the Mountain Hut,” viewers encounter a knitting goat, a rapping bull, and a literature-loving ibex. The story is told using state-of-the-art AI technology—in visuals, sound, and motion.

The recently released Swiss dialect version adds even more charm and depth to the AI characters. Well-known voices, such as those of rapper Bligg and Michael von der Heide, bring the characters to life. This was made possible by generative AI, which automatically synchronized the voice recordings with the characters’ facial expressions without requiring them to lip-sync their lines.

Even though the visual presentation still looks like a video game in some parts and not every transition is perfect, the project impressively demonstrates just how rapidly development is progressing in this field. With every new release, the quality improves—and the next technological update is often just days away.

This technology opens up new possibilities, especially for a country with multiple national languages. It can help overcome language barriers and make minority languages, such as Romansh, more visible and audible.

International Recognition for Swiss Innovation

The original English version has won awards at several international festivals, including in Paris and New York, where it was named “Best AI Short Film.” The trilogy is thus garnering worldwide attention and represents a growing movement: creative filmmakers are using AI as a creative tool.

Pasquale de Sapio, project manager, sums it up: “Artificial intelligence is a creative amplifier. It opens up new forms of expression and changes the way stories are told, but it will never replace the person who guides it.”

An association that helps shape change

As a nonprofit association, swissAI is actively supporting this cultural shift in Switzerland. Founded in 2023, swissAI serves as a platform for exchange, education, and the promotion of responsible AI applications. The association brings together creatives, technical experts, researchers, and media professionals to collaboratively develop new perspectives.

Chris Beyeler, president of swissAI, says: “Artificial intelligence will open up more new opportunities for us than it will destroy. As an association, we promote openness, critical thinking, and the courage to create something new. Projects like this one demonstrate the creative potential that AI can hold when we use it as a tool for greater expression, diversity, and innovation.”

The first two chapters of the trilogy are now available online. Viewers are invited to imagine how the story might continue and, with a little luck, win one of 20 “Feuerstein Survival” kits.
